What Soba does

Soba is an iPhone app for people who count carbohydrates, built by a developer who has type 1 diabetes. You photograph a plate, describe a meal in words, or scan a barcode. Soba returns net carbs, bread units, glycemic index, glycemic load, protein, fat, fiber and calories. Portion weights stay editable, and every number recalculates when you correct them.

The bread unit size is configurable: 10, 11 or 12 grams of carbs per unit, so the app matches the XE, KE and BE counting schools. The glycemic index of the plate is carb-weighted, and the GI and GL zones carry citations to published sources inside the app. Soba saves meals to Apple Health and shows your glucose curve after each meal when Health has readings.

Soba works without accounts, ads or third-party trackers. Photo numbers are estimates and the app presents them as estimates. Soba says nothing about insulin doses. The interface speaks English, German and Russian.
